February 4, 2006: The PhilSports Stadium Stampede

February 4, 2006: A fan stampede occurs at the PhilSports Stadium in Pasig, outside Manila, the Philippines, during a live taping of the TV variety show Wowowee. A total of 73 people died. This was a rare sports venue stampede that did not happen as a result of a sporting event.

The stadium was hosting a taping of Wowowee, a TV variety series and game show on the Philippine network ABS-CBN. It aired from 2005 to 2010, and its reputation was not harmed by the tragedy.

About 30,000 people had gathered outside the stadium, waiting to participate. Among the prizes were cars and one million pesos in cash. According to a report in the Philippine Daily Inquirermost of the victims were from the poorest parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces, generally jobless and attracted by the show's promise of instant wealth.

As with the Hillsborough Disaster in England in 1989, when the gates of the stadium were opened, people rushed in, and ended up trampling each other. To make matters worse, the gates were on a sloped driveway, making it easier for people to trip and fall. In addition to the 73 deaths, another 800 people were hospitalized, but survived.
