January 2, 2023: The Damar Hamlin Game

Note: These entries are dated 2022. This was the first event of calendar year 2023 that I thought was worthy of inclusion. Instead of starting over, I decided to backdate its posting date to January 2, 2022.

January 2, 2023: Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills suffers cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, in a game seen nationally on ESPN Monday Night Football.

The safety from the University of Pittsburgh, in his 2nd season in the NFL, his 1st as a starter, attempted to tackle Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, but was hit hard. He was able to get up under his own power, but, within a couple of seconds, fell to the turf.

He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, and was intubated, and placed in a medically-induced coma. Two days later, he awakened, and showed no signs of neurological damage, and was soon breathing on his own. On January 9, he was transported to Buffalo General Medical Center, and released two days later.

The game, which was in the 1st quarter, was officially suspended, a 1st in NFL history. Despite the Playoff implications, the NFL accepted that the player's life and condition are more important. Due to the fact that the Bills and the Bengals had played one fewer game than every other team, the League adjusted its Playoff schedule accordingly.

Three weeks later, the teams played each other again, in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, at the Bills' Highmark Stadium, in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, New York. Hamlin watched from a luxury suite. And it snowed: "Bills Weather." Nevertheless, the Bengals won the game, 27-10, ending a run which had suggested that the Bills might win the Super Bowl, their 1st, for Hamlin.

On April 18, Hamlin was medically cleared to play again. He returned to action on August 12, in the Bills' preseason opener. He played in all 3 preseason games, but was a "healthy scratch" for the 1st 3 regular-season games. He was activated for their October 1 game, a 48-20 win over the Miami Dolphins in Orchard Park. He played 5 games during the season.
