October 1, 1990: Not satisfied with having wrecked the "mom-and-pop shops" in the rest of the country, Walmart -- then usually stylized as "Wal-Mart" -- opens its first stores in the Northeastern U.S. This makes them the largest retailer in America.
By 2014, the 2nd half of the photo at the top of this post was true. But it wasn't just that. In 1964, a GM worker could afford to buy the product he made, and the product was good. (This was the era of good Corvettes, Pontiac GTOs, Olds Delta 88s, and it was the last year of big Caddy tailfins.)
In 2014, a Walmart worker could barely afford the crap his store sells, and the only thing Walmart actually makes is poverty.
