March 22, 2019: Robert Mueller Lets America Down

March 22, 2019: The Mueller Report is released. For any other President of the United States, it would have been devastating. For Donald Trump, it was just another attack that he could shrug off.

Robert Swan Mueller III was born on August 7, 1944 in Manhattan, and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he rose to the rank of Captain and received several decorations, including the Bronze Star.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, a master's from New York University (NYU), and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He was appointed a U.S. Attorney. He was confirmed as director of the FBI on September 4, 2001, and exactly one week later, the World Trade Center was destroyed. He served as Director for 12 very challenging years.

His impeccable record, and the admiration that both Democrats and Republicans held for him, made him look like the perfect guy to be the Special Counsel investigating Donald Trump, for crimes he may have committed regarding Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. Liberals kept warning Trump that Muller was coming for him.

On March 22, 2019, Mueller issued his report, saying, "If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so. We did not, however, make a determination as to whether the president did commit a crime."

In the end, Mueller decided to accept as policy a Department of Justice memo -- which has no force of law -- written in 1973, in the middle of the Watergate scandal -- that a sitting President cannot be indicted. At the moment when we most needed him to be a soldier for democracy, he decided to follow orders. He let us all down, perhaps more than any American has ever let his country down.

UPDATE: Mueller died on March 20, 2026. It was announced the next day. On his social-media platform "Truth Social," Trump wrote: "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!"

He could no longer hurt guilty people, either.
