June 27, 2024: President Joe Biden debates former President Donald Trump, at CNN's studio at their world headquarters in Atlanta. The network's correspondents Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderated.
NOTE: For events after 2022, I have backdated these entries to the date in question in 2022.
Everybody said Biden looked and sounded terrible. That was true: Above and beyond his age, 81, he had a cold, and, with his stutter well-known, had trouble getting words out, and had trouble getting the right words out.
Everybody said Trump won the debate. That was as big a lie as any Trump told during the debate, and he told many.
For the first half of the debate, Biden was hoarse, probably over-practiced, and did not do well; while Trump was his traditional self, strong and nasty, but lying through his dentures.
Biden bounced back from the commercial break about halfway through, and exposed Trump as the crook, the fool and the liar he is, and Trump couldn't handle it.
Overall, neither candidate looked good. The difference is, the Democrats did not claim a victory. The Republicans did. And the American media declared Biden's campaign for re-election dead.
A "Facebook Friend" of mine said -- and this is how it appeared onscreen, without me having altered it: "Joe blew many, SO MANY , opportunities to reach the undecided voters, the younger voters, and the ones who have turned from him. We needed the Joe from the SOTU speech. He looked like a dog from those ASPCA ads."
On July 21, 34 days later, Biden dropped out of the race, and Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for President.
The following year, Tapper published a book: Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again. The book ignored the fact that Biden was still doing his job, and every economic and international indicator showed that his was doing it well. The book also ignored Trump's wandering mind, which is not due to advancing age: He has always been an idiot.
