May 10, 1986: The Dalglish Double

May 10, 1986: In the 1st (and still only) All-Merseyside FA Cup Final, Liverpool FC defeat Everton FC, 3-1, and complete their 1st (and still only) League and Cup "Double." Ian Rush (twice) and Craig Johnston score the goals.

Everton Football Club had been founded in 1878, in Liverpool. An intraclub dispute in 1892 led to a breakaway team, calling itself Liverpool Football Club. Over the years, they had battled for Merseyside supremacy. In the 1960s, Everton won the Football League in 1963, Liverpool won it in 1964, Liverpool won the FA Cup in 1965, Liverpool won the League and Everton won the Cup in 1966, and Everton won the League in 1970.

Both teams had a minor decline, but Liverpool going going again in the mid-1970s. In the 1980s, while Everton were successful, Liverpool were dominant. Liverpool won the League in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986; and the European Cup (the tournament now known as the UEFA Champions League) in 1981 and 1984. Everton won the Cup in 1984, and won the League and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985.

Each side has had some big moments since. Everton would win the League in 1987 and the Cup in 1995, but haven't won a major trophy since. Liverpool would win the League in 1988 and 1990, the Cup in 2001 and 2006, and the Champions League in 2005 -- but, infamously, would lose the Cup Final in an upset in 1988, and after winning the League since 1990, didn't win it again for 30 years, despite having spent a fortune and having some of the sport's most celebrated players.

After 2 outs, Jim Presley doubled Phelps home to tie it, and Bob Kearny singled Phelps home with the winning run.

Football was out of season. There was 1 game in the NBA Playoffs: The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Houston Rockets, 119-114 at The Forum outside Los Angeles in Inglewood, California, in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. But the Rockets won the series, before losing the NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics.

And there was 1 game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs: The Calgary Flames beat the St. Louis Blues, 6-4 at the Saddledome in Calgary, in Game 5 of the Campbell Conference Finals. The Flames won the series in 7 games, before losing the Stanley Cup Finals to the Montreal Canadiens.
