December 6, 1989: Marc Lépine, a 25-year-old engineering student at École polytechnique de Montréal, shoots 28 women on the campus, 14 of whom die. Proclaiming himself an "anti-feminist" in his suicide note – today, we would call him an "incel" – he finished it by shooting and killing himself.
The Canadian government – then led by the Progressive Conservative Party, mind you – took this seriously, and, instead of merely offering "thoughts and prayers," passed new gun control laws. These did not eliminate mass shootings in Canada, but it did reduce them.
The anniversary of the massacre is commemorated annually in Canada as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, founded by a survivor of the shooting, Nathalie Provost.
École polytechnique de Montréal has since been absorbed by the Université de Montréal, and is known as Polytechnique Montréal.
