October 12, 1931: The Christ the Redeemer Statue Is Dedicated

October 12, 1931: Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) is dedicated, overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 98-foot-high statue (124 feet, counting its pedestal) was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. It is the most famous structure in South America, even more than the city's largest soccer stadium, the Maracanã.
So the 2 most famous statues in the Western Hemisphere were both designed by Frenchmen: This one, and the Statue of Liberty in New York by Frédéric Bartholdi.
October 12, 1931 was a Monday. There were no scores on this historic day. The baseball season had ended 2 days earlier, when the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Athletics in Game 7 of the World Series. Football was in midweek. The NBA hadn't been founded yet. And the NHL season wouldn't begin until November 12.
