December 22, 1937: The Lincoln Tunnel opens, connecting Midtown Manhattan in New York City with Weehawken, Hudson County, New Jersey. Its approachway, now New Jersey Route 495, flowed into New Jersey Route 3, and eventually connected with the New Jersey Turnpike and, still later, the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
George Washington got a bridge in New York City, Abraham Lincoln got a tunnel.
The original tube is now the center tube. What is now the north tube opened on February 1, 1945. What is now the south tube opened on May 25, 1957.
Each tube, roughly at its midpoint, has a marker noting the State Line between the States of New York and New Jersey, known as "The Stripe." The Holland Tunnel, which opened in 1927, also has this.
On top of the New Jersey entrance, abutting the curled highway nicknamed "The Helix," is Weehawken Stadium, home of the baseball and football teams of Weehawken High School. Yes, sports are played on top of the Lincoln Tunnel.

December 22, 1937 was a Wednesday. There were no games that day: Baseball was out of season; the NBA hadn't been founded yet; it was a Wednesday, so there were no football games; and the NHL had no games scheduled.
