September 22, 1989: “Baywatch” Premieres

September 22, 1989: Baywatch premieres in syndication. Theoretically, it stars David Hasselhoff, previously known as the star of Knight Rider. But it becomes a vehicle to make stars out of the lady lifeguards of Los Angeles County, including Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Carmen Electra, Traci Bingham, Donna D'Errico, Nicole Eggert, Gena Lee Nolin, Alexandra Paul, Erika Eleniak, Brooke Burns and Krista Allen. Jeez, with all that, who needs a talking Trans Am?

Definition of a member of Generation X: You think of Hasselhoff as Michael Knight and "Yaz" as Carl Yastrzemski. Definition of a Millennial: You think of The Hoff as Mitch Buchannon and "Yaz" as
Yasmine Bleeth.

The show ran for 11 seasons, and spun off Baywatch Nights, in which Hasselhoff's Mitch Buchannon becomes a private investigator, occasionally looking into supernatural cases that necessitated a rather large suspension of disbelief. A reboot film was released in 2017.

September 22, 1989 was a Friday. These games were played in Major League Baseball:

* The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles, 5-4 at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The winning pitcher was Walt Terrell. The losing pitcher was Dave Johnson -- not to be confused with the Dave Johnson who was the 2nd baseman on the Orioles' 1970 World Champions, having made the last out of the previous year's World Series against the New York Mets, and then, as "Davey" Johnson, managed the Mets to their other title in 1986.

Steve Balboni, Randy Velarde and Mel Hall hit home runs. Don Mattingly went 0-for-3, but had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. For the O's, Cal Ripken went 1-for-3 with a walk.

* The New York Mets beat the Montreal Expos, 3-2 at Shea Stadium. Ron Darling was the winning pitcher. Gregg Jeffries and Mark Carreon hit home runs.

* The Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves, 8-3 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

* The Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 9-7 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.

* The Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-2 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Barry Bonds went 1-for-3 with 2 walks.

* The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-3 at Milwaukee County Stadium. Paul Molitor went 4-for-5. Robin Yount went 1-for-4 with a walk.

* The Oakland Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins, 5-2 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Rickey Henderson went 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.

* The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1 at Busch Memorial Stadium. Denny Walling singled Vince Coleman home with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

* A doubleheader was split at Royals Stadium (now Kauffman Stadium) in Kansas City. The Kansas City Royals won the opener, 9-2. The Seattle Mariners won the nightcap, 2-0.

* The Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 9-6 at Arlington Stadium in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, Texas.

* The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres, 2-1 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Tony Gwynn went 0-for-4.

* And the Houston Astros beat the San Francisco Giants, 3-1 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

And in New Jersey high school football, my Alma Mater, East Brunswick, beat Sayreville, 23-0, at home at Jay Doyle Field.
