August 10, 1995: The Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Cardinals lead, 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th, thanks to solo home runs by Brian Jordan and Mark Sweeney.
The Dodger players had been angry with the balls and strikes called by home plate umpire Jim Quick. When Raul Mondesi struck out, he yelled at Quick, and Quick threw him out of the game. Manager Tommy Lasorda went out to argue, and Quick tossed him, too.
It was Ball Day at Dodger Stadium, and fans objected by throwing their gift balls -- real, hard, leather-covered baseball -- onto the field. Quick cleared the field, and decided to forfeit the game to the Cardinals. As of August 10, 2022, it remains the last forfeit in Major League Baseball history.
