February 2, 2011: The Groundhog Day Blizzard

February 2, 2011: A Winter storm peaks in intensity over the Midwestern United States, becoming known as the Groundhog Day Blizzard and "Snowmageddon."

It was preceded by an ice storm, which made things much worse. The blizzard actually started in the Southwest, dropping snow on places not used to it: Las Cruces, New Mexico; El Paso, Texas, on the State Line with New Mexico and the border with Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; Dallas and Houston, Texas; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Chicago, normally used to bad Winter weather, was hit particularly hard, getting 21 inches of snow and winds over 60 miles per hour. Other Midwestern cities hard hit included (going from west to west) Kansas City, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Detroit and Cleveland.

The storm moved east, and also hit Buffalo, Toronto, Montreal, and Albany, New York, before hitting the Northeast Corridor: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. And then it socked Canada's Maritime Provinces, before heading out to sea. At least 36 deaths were attributed to the storm, most of them from car crashes or heart attacks while shoveling snow.
