September 3, 1991: A grease fire breaks out at the Imperial Foods chicken processing plant in Hamlet, North Carolina, killing 25 people.
Despite three previous fires in 11 years of operation, the plant had never received a safety inspection. The fire killed 25 people and injured 54, many of whom were unable to escape due to locked exits.
This was 80 years after the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York, and long after the reforms put in place after it -- making it even more disgraceful.
*
September 3, 1991 was a Tuesday. These Major League Baseball games were played:
* The New York Yankees lost to the Texas Rangers, 5-1 at Arlington Stadium in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, Texas. José Guzmán outpitched Jeff Johnson. The Rangers got home runs from Rubén Sierra (who might have been a steroid user) and Iván Rodríguez (who probably was). Don Mattingly went 1-for-4.
* The New York Mets beat the Houston Astros, 6-1 at Shea Stadium. Anthony Young was the winning pitcher. It was the 1st major league win for the rookie, having already had his 1st loss. Over the rest of his tenure with the Mets, he would go 4-34.
* The Atlanta Braves beat the Montreal Expos, 4-1 at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. John Smoltz was the winning pitcher.
* The California Angels beat the Boston Red Sox, 2-0 at Fenway Park in Boston. Mark Langston had a 4-hit shutout going with 1 out in the 7th, but manager Buck Rodgers took him out, and replaced him with Mark Eichhorn, who got through the 8th. Bryan Harvey pitched a perfect 9th, to preserve the 4-hit shutout.
* The Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-5 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
* The Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-4 at the SkyDome (now the Rogers Centre) in Toronto. Cal Ripken went 1-for-4. Former Red Sock right fielder Dwight Evans went 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs, including his 385th career home run. It turned out to be his last. Former Astro 1st baseman Glenn Davis went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, including his 172nd home run. Once the Astros' all-time home run leader, it was thought that moving into Camden Yards the next season, with a short right-field fence, would help him. But he was now beset by injuries, and would finish with 190 homers.
* The Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox, 8-0 at the new Comiskey Park (now Rate Field) in Chicago. Kevin Appier pitched a 5-hit shutout, outpitching Jack McDowell. George Brett was injured, and did not play.
* The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Oakland Athletics, 5-3 at Milwaukee County Stadium. Robin Yount, Jim Gantner and B.J. Surhoff hit home runs for the Brew Crew. Paul Molitor went 0-for-4 with a walk. Rickey Henderson went 1-for-5.
* The San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-1 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. Tony Gwynn went 2-for-4.
* The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
* The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-3 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Tom Prince hit a home run in the bottom of the 9th to send the game to extra innings, but Steve Buchele singled Orlando Merced home with the winning run in the top of the 10th inning. Barry Bonds went 0-for-4 with a walk.
* The Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers, 1-0 at the Kingdome. Brian Holman pitched 8 innings of 5-hit shutout ball, and Bill Swift completed the 5-hit shutout. They outpitched Scott Aldred, who allowed only 4 hits, including a 3rd-inning single by Harold Reynolds, to score Dave Valle with the game's only run.
* And, for reasons that Baseball-Reference.com does not give, the Cleveland Indians and the Minnesota Twins played at the Metrodome in Minneapolis the day before, and the day after, but not on September 3.
