August 27, 1964: “Mary Poppins” Premieres

August 27, 1964: Walt Disney's film version of Mary Poppins premieres. It becomes one of the most popular Disney films of all time, and turns Julie Andrews from a Broadway star to a Hollywood star.

Born in a pre-independence Australia in 1899, Helen Lyndon Goff moved to England in 1923, took the name Pamela Lyndon Travers, and published Mary Poppins under the name P.L. Travers in 1934. She kept writing them, eventually taking the series to 8 in 1988, before her death in 1996.

Walt Disney had long wanted to make a film of the original book the magical nanny in 1910 London, and Travers had long resisted. Finally, in 1961, after giving her consultant rights on the film, she relented. It took until 1964 to release the mostly live-action, but partly animated, film.

It was re-released in 1973, and my parents went to see it at the Turnpike Theater Drive-In in East Brunswick. Unfortunately, they took me with them. This is not a movie to take a 3-year-old to.

The 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks depicted the making of the 1964 film. Disney's sequel to the 1964 film, Mary Poppins Returnswas released in 2018, and starred Emily Blunt as Poppins.
