April 23, 1999: Fernando Tatís' Epic Inning

April 23, 1999: The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-5 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Cardinal 3rd baseman Fernando Tatís did something no major league player had done before, nor has since: He hit 2 grand slams (home runs with the bases loaded) in 1 inning. He also sets a record with 8 RBIs in 1 inning.

Just hitting 2 homers in 1 inning doesn't happen all that often. The Cardinals ended up scoring 11 runs in that 3rd inning:

Both grand slams were hit off Chan Ho Park. For the 2nd, there was an ad for Korean Air Lines behind home plate. Clearly, the ad for his homeland’s airline didn't help him.

Tatís reached the postseason with the Texas Rangers in 1998, and the Cardinals in 2000. He last appeared in the major leagues in the 2010 season, with 113 career home runs. At the time, he was with the New York Mets. He was the last Mets player to wear Number 17 before it was retired for Keith Hernandez.

He played 4 more seasons in the Mexican League, and went on to manage there. His son, Fernando Tatís Jr., is now a slugging shortstop for the San Diego Padres.
