April 23, 1932: The Jack Allen Game

April 23, 1932: Newcastle United defeat Arsenal 2-1 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London, thanks to a goal by Jack Allen that should have been disallowed due to the pass from Jimmy Richardson coming from out of bounds.

This may have been the first instance of Arsenal being cheated out of a major trophy, or at least a good shot at one. It was not the last.

Arsenal had won the Cup in 1930, and the Football League in 1931. But in 1932, they finished 2nd in the League, and lost the Final. Thus, they finished one place of each competition, instead of winning both and "doing The Double." It would take until 1971 for Arsenal to do that, and they did it again in 1998 and 2002.

Huddersfield Town were the 1st team to have a Runner-Up Double, in 1928. They have been followed by Arsenal in 1932, Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1939, Leeds United in 1965 and 1970, Everton in 1986, Manchester United in 1995 and 2018, and Manchester City in 2013.

The winning goalscorer, Jack Allen, had previously helped Sheffield Wednesday win the Football League title in 1929 and 1930. He died in 1957.

April 23, 1932 was a Saturday. Fashion designer Halston (born Roy Halston Frowick) and running advocate Jim Fixx were born on this day.

These baseball games were played:

* The New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 16-5 at Yankee Stadium. The A's knocked Gordon Rhodes out of the box with 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning, and a rookie named Ivy Andrews (that was his real name) pitched the rest of the way.

The Yankees struck back with 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st, chasing Rube Walberg, and coasted. Babe Ruth went 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Lou Gehrig went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. For the A's, Jimmie Foxx went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs before leaving the game.

* The New York Giants lost to the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2 at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. Chuck Klein and Les Mallon hit home runs for the Phils. Bill Terry and Mel Ott both went 1-for-5.

* The Brooklyn Dodgers lost to the Boston Braves, 7-1 at Braves Field in Boston.

* The Washington Senators beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-0 at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Carl Fischer pitched a 4-hit shutout.

* The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-9 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Paul Waner went 1-for-2 with 3 walks and an RBI, while Lloyd Waner went 2-for-5.

* The Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers, 8-7 at League Park in Cleveland. The Tigers led 7-4 going into the bottom of the 8th, but the Indians tied it, and then Earl Averill singled Wes Ferrell home in the bottom of the 9th, to win the game, and to make Ferrell the winning pitcher.

* The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. In the bottom of the 12th inning, Reds shortstop Leo Durocher mishandled Billy Herman's grounder, allowing Charlie Grimm to score.
* And the St. Louis Browns beat the Chicago White Sox, 11-6 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
