March 18, 1962: The Algerian War Ends

March 18, 1962: The Évian Accords are signed in Évian-les-Bains in the French Alps. Representatives of the French Fifth Republic and the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic agree to end the Algerian War, which had begun in 1954 as a war of independence from France.

The Accords not only served as a cease-fire, but formalized the status of Algeria as an independent nation and the idea of cooperative exchanges between the two countries.

The war was a very dirty one, with war crimes on both sides. The Algerian side lost about 150,000 men, and the French side lost around 30,000. Algeria had had its internal issues since. And, as with other colonial struggles -- including Mexicans in America -- those Algerians already in France have faced discrimination ever since. But at least there hasn't been another war.

March 18, 1962 was a Sunday. Baseball was in Spring Training. Football was out of season. There were 2 games played in the NBA that day. The Philadelphia Warriors beat the Syracuse Nationals, 97-82 at the Onondaga County War Memorial (now the Upstate Medical University Arena). Wilt Chamberlain scored 28 points and grabbed 26 rebounds. And the Detroit Pistons beat the Cincinnati Royals, 118-107 at Cobo Hall (now Huntington Place) in Detroit.

And the NHL's entire "Original Six" were in action:

* The New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs played to a tie, 2-2 at the old Madison Square Garden.

* The Boston Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens, 6-2 at the Boston Garden.

* And the Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Black Hawks, 4-1 at the Olympia Stadium in Detroit.
