September 16, 1963: The Agreement relating to Malaysia between United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Federation of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore, signed in London on July 9, takes effect.

It provided for the union of North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore with the existing states of the Federation of Malaya. This new political entity was to be known simply as Malaysia. September 16 is now annually commemorated in the country as Malaysia Day.

On August 9, 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia following political and economic disagreements, becoming a sovereign state.

In 2022, Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy of 34 million people, 63 percent of them Muslim; while the Republic of Singapore is a unitary parliamentary republic of 6 million, with a plurality religion of 31 percent Buddhist, with sizeable Christian and Muslim minorities.
