November 26, 2013: Stephen A. Smith's Pronouncement: "Stay Off the Weed!"

November 26, 2013: Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner is suspended by the NFL for marijuana use.

Regardless of its progressive decriminalization, marijuana use is still illegal in the NFL. Why? Because it makes people lazy and less aggressive, and interferes with clear thinking, 3 things that are not good for football players.

I am completely with Stephen. A Smith on this issue. It was on this day that Stephen A., part of the panels of NFL and NBA shows on ESPN, began a legend with this advice: "Stay off the weed!"

Or, as he drags the E sound out, and adds a syllable at the end: "Stay off the weeeeeeee-duh!"

He points out that every single major league sports contract in North America prohibits marijuana use, and that, if a player gets caught, he will get punished. For example: In the NFL, the penalty for a 1st offense is a $15,000 fine; a 2nd offense means $20,000; a 3rd offense is a full-game pay; and for a 4th, a 2-game fine.

That's an expensive hobby. Sounds like some guys need to make a choice: Either play in the NFL, or smoke pot, but you can't do both. And Stephen A. says, "Stay off the damn wee-duh! And they don't listen! Stupid!"

It's gotten to the point where Stephen A. is best known not for having once been a great sports columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, or for his hosting performance, or for his NFL banter with Skip Bayless, or for his fandom for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, or for his fandom for the NBA's New York Knicks, but for his catchphrase. Even fans who see him in an arena try to get him to say it -- and he indulges them.

One more thing: People who use marijuana say it's a safe drug, because it calms you down and makes you peaceful. Let the record show that, in 2018, Brandon Browner was sentenced to 8 years in prison for attempted murder. At the time of his arrest, he was under the influence of... cocaine.

Marijuana activists claim it is not a "gateway drug," leading to the use of other drugs. Not always, but, sometimes, it is.
