October 7, 1996: Fox News Channel Goes On the Air

Roger Ailes

October 7, 1996: Fox News Channel goes on the air, debuting Hannity & Colmes and The O’Reilly Factor.

Rupert Murdoch sued the federal governments of both America and Canada for the legal right to tell lies on a TV news broadcast. In Canada's courts, he lost, and it is illegal to show that channel on their cable systems. In America, he won, and so, led by Chairman Roger Ailes, a former dirty-tricks guy for President Richard Nixon, Fox News continues to lie on America's airwaves.

As a result, for such hosts as Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly and Jesse Watters -- even, for a time, disgraced Iran-Contra scandal figure Oliver North -- Fox News told the most ridiculous and/or damning lies about Democratic figures such as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, and Barack and Michelle Obama; while letting such Republican figures as Newt Gingrich, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney and Donald Trump get away with pretty much anything they did, especially what they said on Fox's own shows.

October 7, 1996 was a Monday. Baseball was between rounds of its Playoffs. The NBA season had not yet begun, but the NHL season had, and these 3 games were played:

* The New Jersey Devils lost to the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-1 at the CoreStates Center (now the Xfinity Mobile Arena) in Philadelphia. It was only the Flyers' 2nd regular-season game at their new arena, after 29 seasons next-door at The Spectrum.

* The Montreal Canadiens and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim played to a tie, 6-6 at the Molson Centre (now the Bell Centre) in Montreal. This was the 1st full season at their new arena, after moving from the Montreal Forum in the middle of the previous season, after 71 years.

* And the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Boston Bruins, 5-2 at the FleetCenter (now the TD Garden) in Boston. The Bruins had also moved into their new arena the season before, after 67 years at the Boston Garden.

And on ABC Monday Night Football, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 17-7 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
