The place is the old Madison Square Garden. The home team is the New York Knicks. The visiting team is the Philadelphia Warriors. Unfortunately for the Knicks, it is the Warriors who have the player in question: West Philadelphia native Wilton Norman Chamberlain.
Wilt, at this point a 23-year-old, 7-foot-1-inch center, scores 43 points and grabs 28 rebounds. Kenny Sears scores 35 for the Knicks, but it's nowhere near enough, as the Warriors beat the Knicks, 118-109. Basketball will never be the same again.
A little more than 2 years later, on March 2, 1962, these teams will play at the Hershey Arena outside Harrisburg, and Wilt will score 100 points in a 169-147 Warriors victory.

* Number 5 USC beat Stanford, 30-28 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
* Number 6 Syracuse beat West Virginia, 44-0 at Archbold Stadium in Syracuse, New York.
* The day before, Number 7 Auburn beat the University of Miami, 21-6 at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
* Number 8 Penn State beat Number 13 Illinois, 20-9 on neutral ground at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Only 15,045 fans came out. If it had been played on either campus, it would have been a sellout.

* The biggest upset of the week came when Number 11 Oregon lost to the University of Washington, 13-12 at Multnomah Stadium (now Providence Park) in Portland, Oregon.
