March 12, 1938: German troops march into Austria, beginning the Anschluss, the joining of the 2 German-speaking nations into a single "Greater German Reich" (Empire).
Chancellor Adolf Hitler of Germany had been born and raised in Austria, and had wanted to bring the countries back together, after they led the Central Powers in World War I. Since fascism had already taken hold in Austria, this wasn't hard, and Hitler's troops were absolutely unopposed. Films were made showing Austrian crowds cheering the German troops. Scenes revealing opposition were not shown.
A meaningless vote was held on April 10. It approved the Anschluss with a vote of 99 percent.
The September 23, 1977 episode of Wonder Woman was titled "Anschluss '77." It featured the superheroine tracking neo-Nazis to (stereotypically) South America, where they managed to create a clone of Hitler. Fortunately, it's unstable, and Wonder Woman was able to defeat its scientist creators and kill it.

March 12, 1938 was a Saturday. Ken Spears, half of the Ruby-Spears animation team, was born. So was Ronnie Tutt, drummer for Elvis Presley in his Las Vegas era. So was Johnny Rutherford, a 3-time winner of auto racing's Indianapolis 500.
Baseball was in Spring Training. Football was out of season. The NBA hadn't been founded yet. There were 2 games played in the NHL. The New York Americans beat the Montreal Maroons, 3-1 at the Montreal Forum. And the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs played to a tie, 3-3 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
And in English soccer, North London team Arsenal went to Yorkshire, and lost to Middlesbrough, 2-1 at Ayresome Park.
